Stops on This Tour (12)

  1. 1
Pa'ia Town The laid-back surf town marks the last place for fuel and food before the winding journey begins. Charley's Restaurant has fueled road-trippers since the 1960s.
  2. 2
Twin Falls — Mile 2 The first major waterfall stop. A short trail through a bamboo forest leads to twin cascades falling into a swimming hole surrounded by tropical greenery.
  3. 3
Ke'anae Arboretum — Mile 16 A garden of tropical plants from around the Pacific. Taro patches and ti plants reflect the traditional Hawaiian agriculture that sustained communities here for centuries.
  4. 4
Ke'anae Peninsula Lookout A dramatic vista of the lava rock peninsula far below, where waves crash against the volcanic shore. The taro farming village has been inhabited for over 600 years.
  5. 5
Upper Waikani Falls — Three Bears Three separate streams plunge side by side from the cliff face — locals call them the Three Bears. One of the most accessible and photogenic falls along the route.
  6. 6
Wai'anapanapa State Park A black sand beach formed from volcanic basite. Sea caves, blowholes, and an ancient coastal trail connect to sacred sites and burial grounds.
  7. 7
Hana Town The "Heavenly Hana" of legend. This remote community of 1,200 people has preserved its Hawaiian character. Hasegawa General Store has served the town since 1910.
  8. 8
Wailua Falls An 80-foot cascade visible from the road. The falls feed into pools surrounded by tropical flowers. Pull safely to the shoulder to take in this roadside spectacle.
  9. 9
Ohe'o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) A series of cascading pools descending to the ocean within Haleakala National Park. Swimming is sometimes permitted when conditions allow — check with rangers.
  10. 10
Pipiwai Trail — Bamboo Forest A four-mile round trip through a dense bamboo forest leads to 400-foot Waimoku Falls. The bamboo trunks creak and knock together in the wind like wooden chimes.
  11. 11
Kipahulu — Lindbergh's Grave Aviator Charles Lindbergh spent his final years in Kipahulu and is buried at Palapala Ho'omau Church. His simple grave overlooks the Pacific he once crossed.
  12. 12
Kaupo Gap Beyond Hana, the road narrows dramatically. The Kaupo Gap opens into the massive crater of Haleakala, and the landscape shifts from rainforest to dry scrubland.
