   White Horse Hill Campground The Hooker Valley Track is an easy, flat walk to the terminal lake of the Hooker Glacier beneath Aoraki/Mount Cook. No booking required. The track is suitable for all fitness levels. However, conditions change rapidly in the Southern Alps — carry a warm layer and rain jacket even on clear days. The glacier creates its own weather systems.

   Mueller Lake Viewpoint The track begins with a boardwalk leading to views of Mueller Lake — a grey-green glacial lake filled with rock flour. The Mueller Glacier retreated rapidly in the 20th century, leaving this lake in its wake. Icebergs calve from the glacier face and float in the murky water.

   Alpine Memorial A memorial to climbers who have died on Aoraki/Mount Cook and surrounding peaks. Over 230 people have perished in these mountains since records began. The Southern Alps demand mountaineering skills equal to the Himalayas — crevassed glaciers, unstable weather, and remote terrain.

   First Swing Bridge The first of three swing bridges crosses the Hooker River. The milky turquoise water is glacial meltwater — rock ground to powder by the Hooker Glacier and suspended in the flow. The colour is most intense on overcast days when the blue wavelengths are not washed out by direct sunlight.

   Second Swing Bridge The second bridge spans the river at a narrowing in the valley. The moraine walls on either side are freshly deposited — rubble pushed into ridges by glacial advance and retreat over thousands of years. The track passes through subalpine scrub of mountain daisy and speargrass.

   Glacier Lily Meadow In November and December, the meadows beside the track bloom with Mount Cook lilies — the world's largest buttercup, with white flowers up to 10 centimetres across. Found only in New Zealand's Southern Alps, the lily is a symbol of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Leave No Trace — do not pick the flowers.

   Third Swing Bridge The final bridge crosses the Hooker River as the valley narrows. Ahead, Aoraki/Mount Cook rises to 3,724 metres — the highest peak in Australasia. The Maori name Aoraki means "cloud piercer." The summit is often hidden in cloud, which only adds to its presence.

   Hooker Lake The track ends at Hooker Lake — a glacial terminal lake dotted with icebergs calved from the Hooker Glacier. Aoraki/Mount Cook towers directly above, its faces streaked with ice and rock. The icebergs are ancient compacted snow — listen for the cracking and calving sounds echoing off the valley walls. This is one of the most accessible views of a major glacial system anywhere in the world.
