   Pine Forest Ascent The trail climbs through blue pine forest hung with prayer flags. Mani stones — rocks carved with Buddhist mantras — line the path. The scent of pine and incense drifts downhill from the monastery. Horses can be hired for the first section of the climb, but the final approach must be made on foot.

   First Prayer Flag View Prayer flags stretch between the trees — five colours representing the five elements: blue for sky, white for clouds, red for fire, green for water, yellow for earth. The Bhutanese believe the wind carries the prayers printed on the flags to benefit all sentient beings. Each flag eventually dissolves, releasing its prayer into the universe.

   Cafeteria Viewpoint The mid-point cafeteria provides the classic photograph — Tiger's Nest across the valley, clinging to the vertical cliff face like something from a dream. The monastery was built in 1692 around the cave where Guru Rinpoche — the founder of Bhutanese Buddhism — meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days, and three hours in the 8th century.

   Waterfall Viewpoint A waterfall cascades from above the monastery into the gorge below. The water is considered sacred. The trail narrows and steepens here — the final approach involves descending stone steps into the gorge and climbing back up to the monastery level.

   Gorge Descent The trail descends 100 metres into the gorge on stone steps. The drop to the valley floor below is severe. A small bridge crosses the stream at the bottom. The sound of the waterfall echoes off the cliff walls. The ascent on the far side leads directly to the monastery entrance.

   Monastery Approach Stairs The final stone staircase climbs to the monastery entrance. Shoes must be removed. Photography is not permitted inside. The monastery complex contains seven temples, each with murals, butter-lamp offerings, and meditation spaces. The cave of Guru Rinpoche is the innermost shrine.

   Taktsang Monastery Tiger's Nest Monastery occupies four main buildings and several meditation caves, fitted into the cliff face at 900 metres above the valley floor. Inside, the smell of butter lamps and incense fills the air. Monks chant in deep, resonant tones. The legend says Guru Rinpoche flew here on the back of a tigress — hence the name. Standing inside one of the most sacred sites in the Himalaya, clinging to a cliff in the clouds, is an experience that transcends religion or culture.
