本导览的站点(10)
- 1 Queenstown — Shotover Street The adventure capital of the world. Bungee jumping was commercialized here, and the Remarkables mountain range provides a sawtooth backdrop to the lakefront town.
- 2 Arrowtown — Buckingham Street A perfectly preserved gold rush town from the 1860s. Miners' cottages line the tree-shaded main street, and gold panning in the Arrow River still yields flakes of color.
- 3 Arrow Junction The turnoff for the Crown Range begins its climb. The last sections of flat road give way to tussock-covered foothills. The Arrow River gorge drops away below.
- 4 Crown Range Summit — 1,076m The highest point on any sealed road in New Zealand. In winter, chains may be required. The panoramic views take in the Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Lake Hayes, and the Wakatipu basin.
- 5 Crown Range Lookout A purpose-built viewpoint at the summit. On clear days, the view stretches from Mount Aspiring in the west to the Rock and Pillar Range in the east — a vast sweep of the South Island.
- 6 Cardrona Valley The descent enters a wide, golden valley of tussock grassland. The Cardrona Ski Area draws winter visitors, and the valley's sheltered microclimate supports vineyards and farms.
- 7 Cardrona Hotel Built in 1863 during the gold rush, the Cardrona Hotel is one of New Zealand's most photographed buildings. Its corrugated iron facade and vintage petrol pump have appeared on countless postcards.
- 8 Cardrona Bra Fence A roadside wire fence draped with thousands of bras — a quirky New Zealand tradition that started mysteriously and persists despite periodic cleanings. A charity now benefits from the phenomenon.
- 9 Wanaka Lakefront Lake Wanaka stretches 45 kilometers beneath Mount Aspiring. The famous "Wanaka Tree" — a lone willow growing in the lake — has become one of the most photographed trees in the world.
- 10 Roys Peak Viewpoint (Roadside) The trailhead for Roys Peak is visible from the road. The summit hike rewards with one of the great panoramic views of the Southern Alps — Lake Wanaka sprawled below, mountains stacked to every horizon.
