🚗15 mapped stops

A 295-mile Himalayan crossing between Manali and Leh through five mountain passes above 4,000 meters. One of the highest motorable roads in the world, open only June through September. Altitude acclimatization is essential — the Tanglang La reaches 5,328 meters.

本导览的站点(15)

  1. 1
Manali — Old Town The hill station starting point at 2,050 meters. Manali's Old Town clusters around the Hadimba Temple — a 1553 wooden shrine surrounded by deodar cedar forest.
  2. 2
Rohtang Pass — 3,978m The first major pass. "Rohtang" means "pile of corpses" — testament to the traders and travelers lost to blizzards here. The new Atal Tunnel bypasses the pass, but the old road remains epic.
  3. 3
Atal Tunnel — 10,171m long The world's longest highway tunnel above 3,000 meters, opened in 2020. It bypasses Rohtang Pass entirely. Named for former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, it cut travel time by hours.
  4. 4
Sissu — Chandra River The Chandra River valley opens up — barren mountains stripped of vegetation by altitude and wind. The landscape shifts from green hill station to high-altitude desert within kilometers.
  5. 5
Keylong — Lahaul Valley The district headquarters of Lahaul. Monasteries dot the mountainsides. This is the last significant settlement before the highway enters the true wilderness of the high passes.
  6. 6
Baralacha La — 4,890m A windswept pass between Lahaul and Zanskar. Three rivers — the Bhaga, Chandra, and Yunam — originate near here. Snow can block the road even in summer. The altitude hits hard.
  7. 7
Sarchu — High Altitude Camp A tented camp at 4,290 meters used as an overnight halt. Acute mountain sickness is common here. The Gata Loops — 21 hairpin turns — begin the climb to the next pass.
  8. 8
Naki La — 4,739m One of the less publicized but equally demanding passes. The road here is often nothing more than a rough track carved through loose scree and glacial moraine.
  9. 9
Lachalung La — 5,059m Above 5,000 meters, the landscape is lunar. Only the hardiest plants survive. The air holds half the oxygen of sea level. Headaches and nausea are common — descend if symptoms worsen.
  10. 10
Pang — Highest Habitation A seasonal dhaba (roadside cafe) settlement at 4,600 meters on the Morey Plains — a vast high-altitude plateau. Tea and instant noodles are the sustenance of choice at this extreme altitude.
  11. 11
Tanglang La — 5,328m The highest point on the highway — among the highest motorable passes in the world. Prayer flags snap in winds that can knock you off your feet. The descent toward Leh begins here.
  12. 12
Upshi — Indus Valley The first village in the Indus Valley. The relief of descending to 3,400 meters is palpable. The landscape transforms to the arid beauty of Ladakh — a cold desert of stark mountains and ancient monasteries.
  13. 13
Hemis Monastery Ladakh's largest and wealthiest monastery, founded in 1672. The annual Hemis Festival features masked dancers performing Buddhist cham dances in the monastery courtyard.
  14. 14
Thiksey Monastery A 12-story monastery complex resembling the Potala Palace in Lhasa. The morning prayer ceremony at dawn, with monks chanting as the sun illuminates the Indus Valley, is transcendent.
  15. 15
Leh — Old Town & Palace The journey ends in Leh at 3,500 meters — the old capital of Ladakh. The nine-story Royal Palace overlooks the old town. The journey from Manali has crossed some of the highest terrain accessible by road anywhere on Earth.
