🚶10 mapped stops
Traverse the Continental Divide on a cliffside path carved into the Garden Wall — Glacier's most spectacular ridge walk with views into two oceans' watersheds.
이 투어의 정차 지점 (10)
- 1 Logan Pass Visitor Center The Highline Trail begins at Logan Pass on the Continental Divide — 2,026 metres above sea level. Bear spray is mandatory; this is prime grizzly habitat. The parking lot fills by 8 AM in summer. Take the free shuttle from Apgar or St. Mary. Download your audio before starting; signal is nonexistent on the trail.
- 2 Garden Wall Cliffside Within the first kilometre, the trail narrows to a shelf carved into the cliff face. A cable bolted into the rock provides a handhold. The exposure is real but manageable — the Garden Wall drops hundreds of metres to the valley floor.
- 3 Big Bend Overlook The trail rounds a massive curve in the Garden Wall. Below, the Going-to-the-Sun Road switchbacks along the cliff — cars look like insects. Mountain goats frequent the rock outcrops here, utterly indifferent to the drop.
- 4 Haystack Butte The butte rises above the trail with views extending to both the Pacific and Atlantic sides of the divide. Every drop of rain that falls to your left eventually reaches the Pacific; to your right, Hudson Bay and the Arctic Ocean.
- 5 Alpine Wildflower Meadow In July and August, the meadows below the trail explode with beargrass, glacier lilies, and Indian paintbrush. Practice Leave No Trace — stay on the established path. These alpine plants take decades to establish and moments to destroy.
- 6 Grinnell Glacier Overlook Trail Junction A spur trail climbs steeply to an overlook of Grinnell Glacier — one of Glacier's remaining 25 glaciers, down from 150 in 1850. The ice is retreating visibly year by year. Scientists estimate all glaciers in the park will be gone by 2030.
- 7 Ahern Drift A permanent snowfield crosses the trail, often persisting into September. Cross carefully — the snow is compacted and slippery. In early season, the snowfield can be several metres deep.
- 8 Granite Park Chalet The historic stone chalet, built in 1914 by the Great Northern Railway. It operates as a backcountry lodge — no electricity, no running water, meals cooked on propane. Reserve months in advance. The view from the porch encompasses the Livingston Range.
- 9 Swiftcurrent Pass The high point of the traverse at 2,134 metres. Swiftcurrent Glacier hangs on the cliff below — another remnant shrinking with each passing summer. The descent toward the Many Glacier Valley begins here.
- 10 The Loop Trailhead The trail drops through switchbacks to the Going-to-the-Sun Road at The Loop. The free shuttle returns you to Logan Pass or down to the valley. Nearly 19 kilometres of Continental Divide traversing — one of the great ridge walks in the world.
