이 투어의 정차 지점 (10)

  1. 1
Many Glacier Hotel Trailhead Grinnell Glacier trail begins at the historic Swiss-style lodge on Swiftcurrent Lake. This is prime grizzly country — bear spray is not optional. Check trail status at the ranger station; snow may close the upper section until mid-July. Carry warm layers; temperature drops sharply near the glacier.
  2. 2
Swiftcurrent Lake Shoreline The trail follows Swiftcurrent Lake beneath the towering wall of Mount Gould. The lake's unusual turquoise colour comes from glacial flour — rock ground to powder by the glacier upstream, suspended in meltwater.
  3. 3
Lake Josephine Junction A connector trail leads to the boat dock on Lake Josephine — the optional boat shortcut saves three flat kilometres. The full trail continues along the lakeshore through stands of subalpine fir.
  4. 4
Grinnell Lake Viewpoint Below the trail, Grinnell Lake glows an improbable shade of turquoise. The colour intensifies through summer as glacial melt increases. Waterfalls cascade from the headwall above, fed by the glacier you are approaching.
  5. 5
Moose Flats The trail crosses open meadows where moose browse in the willows. The Continental Divide forms the skyline — a serrated wall of ancient Precambrian sedimentary rock, some 1.5 billion years old.
  6. 6
Waterfall Switchbacks The trail begins climbing in earnest, switchbacking alongside a waterfall. The mist keeps the vegetation lush — ferns, monkey flowers, and moss carpet every surface. In July, the wildflower display is extraordinary.
  7. 7
Upper Grinnell Valley Above tree line, the landscape becomes stark — bare rock, snowfields, and scattered alpine plants. Mountain goats navigate the cliff faces with supernatural agility. The Garden Wall rises vertically to the south.
  8. 8
Grinnell Glacier Overlook The glacier appears — a dirty white tongue of ice clinging to the headwall between Mount Gould and the Garden Wall. In 1850, this glacier covered 300 acres. Today it is less than 100 and shrinking visibly each year.
  9. 9
Upper Grinnell Lake The milky turquoise lake at the glacier's toe is barely a century old — it did not exist when the glacier was larger. Icebergs calve from the glacier face and float in the lake through August. The water temperature is just above freezing.
  10. 10
Return to Many Glacier The descent offers shifting perspectives on the lakes below. The Many Glacier Valley was carved by ice sheets over two kilometres thick during the Pleistocene. What you saw today is the last remnant of that ancient power.
