South Kaibab Trail — Grand Canyon
🚶10 mapped stops
The Grand Canyon's most dramatic descent — exposed ridge walking with unobstructed views into the abyss, following the South Kaibab Trail to Skeleton Point.
Tappe di Questo Tour (10)
- 1 South Kaibab Trailhead The South Kaibab Trail follows a ridge rather than a canyon — meaning shade is nonexistent and views are constant. There is no water on this trail at any point. Carry at minimum two litres to Skeleton Point and back. The shuttle from the visitor centre is the only access; no private vehicles are allowed at the trailhead.
- 2 Ooh Aah Point Named by hikers who could not help themselves. The trail rounds a corner and the Grand Canyon opens in full — a mile deep, ten miles wide, and painted in every shade of red, orange, and cream. The Coconino Sandstone cliffs drop away vertically on both sides of the trail.
- 3 Cedar Ridge A broad saddle with restrooms and hitching posts for mule trains. The juniper trees here provide the last shade on the descent. Most rangers recommend this as the turnaround point for casual hikers — the real effort is the climb back out.
- 4 O'Neill Butte A free-standing butte beside the trail, capped by Coconino Sandstone. The trail descends through the Hermit Shale — crumbly red rock that forms slopes rather than cliffs. Ancient fern fossils are embedded in these layers from a 280-million-year-old swamp.
- 5 Tipoff Junction The junction with the Tonto Trail, which traverses the broad platform of Bright Angel Shale. Below this point, the trail drops into the Inner Gorge — Vishnu Schist, nearly two billion years old, the oldest rocks exposed anywhere in the canyon.
- 6 Skeleton Point At 920 metres below the rim, Skeleton Point offers a direct view down to the Colorado River and Phantom Ranch. The river appears deceptively close but remains another 460 metres of descent below. This is the mandatory turnaround for day hikers in summer — continuing to the river and back in one day courts heat stroke.
- 7 Panorama Point Overlook A viewpoint near Skeleton Point looking east toward the Bright Angel Creek corridor. The layered geology reads like a textbook from this vantage — each stratum a chapter in Earth's history, stacked in perfect sequence.
- 8 Return: Cedar Ridge Rest The climb back to Cedar Ridge gains 550 metres. In summer temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, the ascent can take twice as long as the descent. Wet a bandana and drape it around your neck. Eat salty foods to prevent hyponatraemia.
- 9 Return: Ooh Aah Again Passing Ooh Aah Point on the return, the light has changed and the canyon looks entirely different. Afternoon shadows deepen the colours and reveal textures invisible in morning light. The South Rim approaches above.
- 10 Return: South Kaibab Trailhead The final switchbacks are the steepest section of the entire trail. Reaching the rim, the shuttle returns you to the village. You have descended through nearly half the age of the Earth and climbed back out — a journey measured in time as much as distance.
