🚶10 mapped stops
The northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail and Maine's highest peak — a rugged scramble through boreal forest to the exposed granite summit of Katahdin.
Tappe di Questo Tour (10)
- 1 Roaring Brook Campground Baxter State Park is deliberately primitive — no cell service, no electricity, limited parking. Reserve a day-use parking spot months in advance. Katahdin demands respect: the weather above treeline changes in minutes, and the mountain has claimed lives. Carry rain gear, warm layers, and headlamp even on clear days.
- 2 Chimney Pond Trail Junction The trail enters dense boreal forest — spruce, fir, and birch. The understory is thick with moss and fern. Black bears inhabit these woods; make noise as you walk. The trail is well-marked but rocky, climbing steadily toward the cirque.
- 3 Chimney Pond A glacial tarn set in a dramatic cirque beneath Katahdin's headwall. The Knife Edge ridge connects Pamola Peak to Baxter Peak along the cirque rim. From here, the scale of the mountain becomes apparent — the headwall rises 600 metres in near-vertical granite.
- 4 Saddle Trail Lower The Saddle Trail is the most direct route to the summit from Chimney Pond. The trail climbs steeply through scrub, transitioning to bare rock. Cairns mark the route above treeline. Wind speeds on exposed sections regularly exceed 80 kilometres per hour.
- 5 The Saddle A broad col between the summit and the Northwest Basin. The vegetation is alpine tundra — tiny plants clinging to existence in extreme conditions. The view opens to the Northwest Basin, a glacier-carved bowl holding several pristine ponds.
- 6 Cathedral Trail Junction An alternate route descends the Cathedral Trail — a series of granite chimneys requiring hand-over-hand scrambling. The main trail continues along the Tableland, a relatively flat alpine plateau.
- 7 The Tableland The Tableland is a vast, flat expanse of alpine tundra at 1,500 metres — one of the largest alpine zones in the eastern United States. In fog, navigation here is challenging; follow the cairns carefully. The exposure to weather is total.
- 8 Thoreau Spring Named for Henry David Thoreau, who attempted Katahdin in 1846 and turned back in cloud and rain. He wrote of the mountain as "vast, Titanic, and such as man never inhabits." The spring is a seasonal water source — do not depend on it.
- 9 Baxter Peak Summit The summit sign reads "Katahdin — Northern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail." For AT thru-hikers, this is the finish line after 3,500 kilometres. For day hikers, it is the highest point in Maine at 1,606 metres, with views extending to the Canadian border on clear days.
- 10 Return to Roaring Brook The descent demands focus — tired legs on steep, rocky terrain cause most accidents. The park gate closes at a fixed time; late returns trigger search-and-rescue. Katahdin is a mountain that has humbled experienced hikers for generations. Treat it accordingly.
