Path of the Gods — Amalfi Coast, Italy
🚶8 mapped stops
A clifftop trail high above the Amalfi Coast connecting Agerola to Nocelle — Mediterranean views, terraced lemon groves, and the belief that gods once walked this path.
Tappe di Questo Tour (8)
- 1 Bomerano (Agerola) The Path of the Gods begins in the mountain village of Bomerano, 650 metres above the Amalfi Coast. The trail is a balcony above the Mediterranean — no significant climbing, just a steady traverse with the sea far below. No permit required. Bring water; there are no sources on the trail. Start early to avoid midday heat and the crowds that build by late morning.
- 2 First Amalfi Overlook Within minutes, the first viewpoint opens up — the entire Amalfi Coast curves below in a crescent of cliffs, villages, and sea. Positano is visible in the distance, tumbling down its cliff face in pastel tiers. The water is impossibly blue. Ancient Greeks sailed this coast and named it for their gods.
- 3 Terraced Vineyard Section The trail passes through abandoned terraces where vines and lemon trees once grew. The dry-stone walls are crumbling but the terraces demonstrate centuries of agricultural engineering on near-vertical terrain. Wild herbs — oregano, rosemary, and fennel — grow in the ruins.
- 4 Grotto Biscotto A natural rock shelter carved by wind erosion into the limestone cliff. Shepherds used these grottos for millennia. The overhanging rock provides shade and a natural frame for the view — boats trace white wakes across the blue Tyrrhenian Sea far below.
- 5 Cliff Face Trail The narrowest section of the path — cut into the cliff face with the sea 500 metres directly below. The limestone has eroded into natural sculptures. Iron railings protect the most exposed sections. The sensation of walking on the edge of the world is palpable.
- 6 Valley of the Ferriere View Looking inland, the Valle delle Ferriere drops away — a nature reserve containing species from the Tertiary period, including a fern found nowhere else in Europe. The contrast between the lush valley and the dry, Mediterranean coastline is striking.
- 7 Colle Serra Viewpoint The trail rounds a headland with panoramic views in every direction. On clear days, the island of Capri floats on the horizon — Tiberius's island retreat, visible from this ancient pathway. The Li Galli islands — said to be the rocks of the Sirens — sit directly offshore.
- 8 Nocelle The trail descends to the village of Nocelle, perched 450 metres above the sea with Positano directly below. The famous 1,500-step staircase descends to Positano beach — or take the bus for a gentler return. You have walked a path that Homer's gods might have envied, high above one of the most beautiful coastlines on Earth.
