A day hike to the base of Mount Fitz Roy — Patagonia's most jagged peak, rising like a granite blade above turquoise glacial lakes near El Chalten.

Paradas en Este Tour (10)

  1. 1
El Chalten Visitor Centre El Chalten is Argentina's trekking capital — a small town that exists solely for access to the Fitz Roy massif. No permits required; trails are free and well-marked. However, Patagonian weather is notoriously volatile — wind, rain, and snow can arrive without warning at any season. Carry full storm gear, warm layers, and sunscreen. The trail gains 750 metres over 10 kilometres to Laguna de los Tres.
  2. 2
Rio de las Vueltas Viewpoint The trail climbs through lenga beech forest above the Rio de las Vueltas valley. El Chalten sits below — named for the Tehuelche word for Fitz Roy itself, meaning "smoking mountain" for the clouds that perpetually wreathe the summit. Early explorers mistook the clouds for volcanic smoke.
  3. 3
Mirador Fitz Roy The first viewpoint of Fitz Roy through a gap in the forest. The peak appears — 3,405 metres of vertical granite, its summit a cluster of impossibly steep spires. Fitz Roy is considered one of the most technically difficult mountains in the world; it was not climbed until 1952.
  4. 4
Laguna Capri A glacial tarn surrounded by lenga forest. On calm days, Fitz Roy reflects perfectly in the turquoise water — one of the most photographed scenes in Patagonia. The lake is a popular rest stop and wild camping area. The Patagonian logo — the silhouette used by the clothing brand — is based on this mountain's skyline.
  5. 5
Rio Blanco Camp The trail passes through the Rio Blanco campsite — the last sheltered area before the final steep climb. The forest provides wind protection; beyond the treeline, full exposure begins. Camping here is free but fires are prohibited. Practice Leave No Trace — this ecosystem is fragile and heavily visited.
  6. 6
Final Ascent Switchbacks The trail steepens dramatically — 400 metres of elevation gain in just over a kilometre through loose moraine and boulders. The switchbacks are relentless. Fitz Roy disappears behind the moraine wall, building anticipation for the reveal at the top.
  7. 7
Moraine Crest Cresting the moraine, Laguna de los Tres appears below — a milky turquoise lake fed by the glacier clinging to Fitz Roy's base. The mountain erupts from behind the moraine in full glory, its spires reaching into the sky like a cathedral of granite. The emotional impact of this reveal is overwhelming.
  8. 8
Laguna de los Tres The lake at the foot of Fitz Roy — icebergs calve from the glacier face and float in the turquoise water. The granite walls rise 1,500 metres directly from the lake. The sound of cracking ice echoes off the rock. This is one of the great mountain viewpoints on Earth — a wall of stone and ice that defies comprehension.
  9. 9
Glaciar de los Tres Viewpoint From a viewpoint slightly above the lake, the full extent of the glacier is visible — a river of ice flowing from the col between Fitz Roy and Poincenot. The crevasses glow blue in the compressed ice. Condors ride the thermals above the ridge, their three-metre wingspans barely moving.
  10. 10
Return to El Chalten The descent retraces the route. Patagonian afternoon light paints the granite walls in warm tones — gold, pink, and deep orange. The lenga forest provides shelter from the wind that builds through the day. El Chalten's cafes and cervecerías await — cold Patagonian craft beer has never been more earned.
