🚶10 mapped stops

A glacially carved canyon penetrating the heart of the Teton Range — wildflower meadows, cascading creeks, and the sheer granite walls of the youngest mountains in the Rockies.

Stationen dieser Tour (10)

  1. 1
Jenny Lake Boat Dock Cascade Canyon is grizzly bear country. Carry bear spray and know how to use it. The boat shuttle across Jenny Lake saves five kilometres of flat walking — purchase tickets at the dock. The Tetons rise directly from the valley floor with no foothills; the effect is staggering.
  2. 2
West Shore Boat Dock From the western shore, Cascade Canyon cuts directly into the range. The Tetons are the youngest mountains in the Rockies — just nine million years old — pushed upward along the Teton Fault while Jackson Hole dropped.
  3. 3
Hidden Falls A short climb through spruce forest reveals Hidden Falls, dropping 30 metres over granite ledges. The water is snowmelt from the high peaks — cold enough to numb your hands in July.
  4. 4
Inspiration Point The viewpoint overlooks Jenny Lake with the Gros Ventre Range beyond. The lake itself fills a glacial moraine basin — carved by ice that once filled this entire canyon to a depth of 600 metres.
  5. 5
Cascade Canyon Mouth The canyon narrows and the trail enters a U-shaped valley — the signature of glacial carving. Cascade Creek tumbles over boulders beside the trail. In June and July, wildflowers carpet every opening: lupine, Indian paintbrush, and columbine.
  6. 6
Cascade Creek Meadow A broad meadow opens where avalanche paths keep the forest at bay. Moose feed in the willows along the creek. The north wall of the canyon rises 1,200 metres in nearly vertical granite — the Cathedral Group of peaks.
  7. 7
The Wigwams Pointed rock spires stand like stone tepees along the canyon walls. The geology here is Precambrian gneiss — some of the oldest rock in North America, 2.7 billion years old, thrust upward by the young fault.
  8. 8
Canyon Fork Junction The trail splits — north fork toward Lake Solitude, south fork toward the Alaska Basin. Either direction leads deeper into wilderness. This junction is a good turnaround for a day hike; the round trip to here is approximately 15 kilometres.
  9. 9
Lake Solitude Viewpoint If energy permits, the north fork climbs to Lake Solitude — an alpine tarn at 2,900 metres reflecting the Grand Teton. Snow often lingers at the lake until August. The silence at this elevation is complete.
  10. 10
Return to Jenny Lake The return through Cascade Canyon reveals the Tetons framed by the canyon mouth. The last boat shuttle departs the west shore at 6 PM — check current schedules. The golden hour light on the Tetons from the east shore is worth waiting for.
