    Coyhaique The regional capital of Aysen — the only real city along the Carretera. A crucial resupply point for fuel, cash, and provisions. The Reserva Nacional Coyhaique offers easy trails through lenga beech forest.

    Cerro Castillo — Basalt Castle A fortress of basalt spires resembling a medieval castle. The trek to the base of Cerro Castillo reveals a turquoise glacial lake at the foot of the basalt towers.

    Puerto Rio Tranquilo — Marble Caves Swirling blue marble caves carved by the turquoise waters of General Carrera Lake — the second-largest lake in South America. Boat tours enter the caves at water level.

    Caleta Tortel — Dorf der Zypressenstege Ein Dorf, das komplett auf Stelzen gebaut und durch Zypressenstege verbunden ist — keine Straßen, keine Autos. Die Häuser klammern sich an die steilen Fjordwände. Gletscher kalben vom Nördlichen Patagonischen Eisfeld in den Fjord.

    Villa O'Higgins — Ende der Straße Die Carretera Austral endet in Chiles abgelegenster Stadt. Dahinter liegt das Südliche Patagonische Eisfeld — die drittgrößte Eismasse der Erde. Die Straße hört einfach am Rand der Wildnis auf.

    Lago O'Higgins Chiles tiefster See mit 836 Metern. Der O'Higgins-Gletscher kalbt Eisberge in das milchig-blaue Wasser des Sees. Von hier aus führen nur noch Boote und Pfade südwärts in Richtung Torres del Paine.

    Aussichtspunkt Glaciar Chico Ein Aussichtspunkt über das Nördliche Patagonische Eisfeld — 4.200 Quadratkilometer Eis. Der Glaciar Chico fließt in den Lago General Carrera. Das Eis hat sich im letzten Jahrhundert um Kilometer zurückgezogen.

    Zusammenfluss des Río Baker Wo sich die Flüsse Baker und Nef vereinen — einer türkisfarben, einer schlammig-grau — fließen die beiden Farben hunderte Meter nebeneinander, ohne sich zu vermischen. Ein beeindruckendes Naturphänomen.
