Overseas Highway: The Full Keys Drive
🚗10 mapped stops
160 miles and 42 bridges connecting the Florida Keys, ending 90 miles from Cuba. Henry Flagler's railroad workers called it "Flagler's Folly" — 700 died building it. The African Queen boat is docked at Key Largo, Hemingway's six-toed cats still roam his house, and the southernmost point buoy isn't actually the southernmost point.
Stationen dieser Tour (10)
- 1 Florida City — Last Chance Saloon The last mainland town before the Keys. Stock up here — once you cross the Card Sound bridge, you are island-hopping with water on both sides.
- 2 Key Largo — Mile Marker 100 The first and longest Key. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park protects the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States.
- 3 Islamorada — Mile Marker 82 The "Sport Fishing Capital of the World." In 1935, a Labor Day hurricane killed 423 veterans building the Overseas Highway — a monument marks the site.
- 4 Long Key State Park — Mile Marker 67 Henry Flagler built a luxury fishing camp here in 1908. The 1935 hurricane destroyed it completely. Mangroves and tidal flats have reclaimed the land.
- 5 Seven Mile Bridge — Mile Marker 47 The crown jewel of the Overseas Highway — seven miles of concrete spanning open ocean. The old Flagler railroad bridge runs parallel, broken and beautiful.
- 6 Bahia Honda State Park — Mile Marker 37 Consistently rated one of the best beaches in the United States. The old Bahia Honda Bridge towers above — a relic of Flagler's railroad built in 1912.
- 7 Big Pine Key — National Key Deer Refuge Home to the endangered Key deer, a miniature subspecies standing just 30 inches tall. Only 700-800 remain, found nowhere else on Earth.
- 8 Sugarloaf Key — Bat Tower In 1929, a real estate developer built a 35-foot tower to attract bats for mosquito control. The bats never came. The tower still stands as a monument to optimism.
- 9 Key West — Mallory Square The nightly sunset celebration draws jugglers, artists, and crowds to the waterfront. Key West is closer to Havana than to Miami.
- 10 Southernmost Point Buoy The iconic buoy marks the southernmost point in the continental United States — just 90 miles from Cuba. The journey across the water ends at land's end.
