Corniche Roads: The French Riviera
🚗10 mapped stops
Three parallel roads — the Grande, Moyenne, and Basse Corniches — connecting Nice to Monaco along the Mediterranean coast. Grace Kelly drove these roads in "To Catch a Thief" and, tragically, died on one in 1982.
Stationen dieser Tour (10)
- 1 Nice — Promenade des Anglais The Riviera's capital city and its legendary seafront promenade. The English aristocrats who built it in the 1820s would barely recognize the vibrant, multicultural city Nice has become.
- 2 Col de Villefranche — Grande Corniche The highest of the three roads, built by Napoleon along the ancient Roman Via Julia Augusta. The views from 500 meters above the sea are the most dramatic on the entire Riviera.
- 3 La Turbie — Trophy of the Alps The Romans built a monumental trophy here in 6 BC to celebrate Augustus's conquest of 45 Alpine tribes. The partially restored monument towers above the Grande Corniche.
- 4 Eze Village — Moyenne Corniche A medieval village perched like an eagle's nest 427 meters above the sea. Nietzsche conceived part of "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" while walking the steep path from the shore to Eze.
- 5 Jardin Exotique d'Eze The exotic garden at the summit of Eze village, surrounding the ruins of a 12th-century castle. Cacti and succulents frame views stretching from Italy to Saint-Tropez on clear days.
- 6 Villefranche-sur-Mer — Basse Corniche The lowest road hugs the coastline through this colorful fishing village. Jean Cocteau decorated the chapel on the harbor. The deep natural harbor has sheltered fleets since the Greeks.
- 7 Cap Ferrat — Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild The Rothschild's pink villa and its nine themed gardens occupy the tip of the Cap Ferrat peninsula. Baroness Beatrice required the gardeners to wear sailor berets.
- 8 Beaulieu-sur-Mer — Villa Kerylos An exact replica of an ancient Greek villa, built in 1902 with obsessive archaeological accuracy. Even the furniture was reconstructed from vase paintings and literary descriptions.
- 9 Monaco — Monte Carlo Casino The Grand Prix circuit winds through these streets every May. The Belle Epoque casino designed by Charles Garnier has defined Riviera glamour since 1863.
- 10 Monaco — Prince's Palace The Grimaldi family has ruled from this cliff-top fortress since 1297. Grace Kelly became Princess Grace here in 1956. The changing of the guard occurs daily at 11:55.
