Chapman's Peak Drive: Cape Town's Cliff Road
🚗10 mapped stops
One of the world's most spectacular marine drives — just 5.5 miles of road carved into the cliff face between Hout Bay and Noordhoek on the Cape Peninsula. 114 curves with sheer drops to the Atlantic below. Note: driving is on the left.
Stationen dieser Tour (10)
- 1 Hout Bay — Northern Approach The fishing village of Hout Bay sits in a sheltered cove beneath the Sentinel peak. The harbor's fish market sells crayfish and snoek — the Cape's signature smoked fish.
- 2 Chapman's Peak Toll Plaza The toll road begins its traverse. The original road was built by convict labor between 1915 and 1922, carved from the sheer granite and sandstone cliff face above the Atlantic.
- 3 Chapman's Point Viewpoint The first major viewpoint reveals Hout Bay behind and the open Atlantic below. The 593-meter Chapman's Peak towers above. The geological contact between granite and Table Mountain sandstone is visible in the cliff face.
- 4 East Fort — Military Lookout A World War II gun emplacement built to defend the Cape from Japanese submarine attack. The concrete bunkers are hidden in the cliff and offer commanding views of the approaches to False Bay.
- 5 Halfway Point — Picnic Area A sheltered picnic site carved into the cliff. Between July and November, southern right whales are visible in the waters below — mothers and calves often surface within 200 meters of the shore.
- 6 Sunset Viewpoint The western-facing cliff captures the Atlantic sunset. The sun drops into the ocean, painting the sandstone cliffs orange. This is one of Cape Town's premier sunset locations.
- 7 Chapman's Peak — Highest Point The road reaches its highest point above the sea. The sheer drop below is hundreds of meters. In strong southeast winds, clouds cascade over the peak like a waterfall.
- 8 Noordhoek Beach Viewpoint The road descends to reveal Noordhoek's 8-kilometer white sand beach stretching to Kommetjie. The wreck of the Kakapo, which ran aground in 1900, is still visible at low tide.
- 9 Noordhoek Farm Village A collection of farm stalls and restaurants at the southern end of the drive. The Cape's famous wine, cheese, and biltong are available here — the perfect conclusion to this brief but unforgettable drive.
- 10 Long Beach — Kommetjie Road The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve lies ahead. Baboons patrol the roadside — keep windows closed and food secured. The Cape Point lighthouse marks the meeting of two oceans.
