- 1 Golfe-Juan — Napoleon's Landing On March 1, 1815, Napoleon stepped ashore here with 1,000 men after escaping Elba. A column marks the exact spot where the emperor began his audacious march on Paris.
- 2 Cannes — La Croisette Napoleon passed through what was then a small fishing village. Today the Boulevard de la Croisette is lined with luxury hotels and the Palais des Festivals hosts the world's most famous film festival.
- 3 Grasse — Perfume Capital The world capital of perfume since the 16th century. Fields of jasmine, rose, and lavender supply the nose factories of Chanel, Dior, and Guerlain. Napoleon avoided the main road here, taking mountain paths.
- 4 Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey The Pre-Alps begin to rise. Napoleon marched through the night here, arriving at dawn. The plateau town sits at 730 meters with views back to the Mediterranean coast.
- 5 Castellane — Verdon Gateway A medieval town beneath a 184-meter limestone cliff crowned by a chapel. Napoleon's troops bivouacked here on March 2. The Verdon Gorge — Europe's Grand Canyon — lies nearby.
- 6 Digne-les-Bains — Lavender Capital A spa town at the crossroads of Provence and the Alps. The Geological Reserve here protects fossils dating back 300 million years. Lavender fields purple the surrounding hillsides in July.
