Overseas Highway: Miami to Key West
🚗8 mapped stops
160 miles and 42 bridges connecting the Florida Keys, ending 90 miles from Cuba. Henry Flagler's railroad workers called it "Flagler's Folly" — 700 died building it. The African Queen boat is docked at Key Largo, Hemingway's six-toed cats still roam his house, and the southernmost point buoy isn't actually the southernmost point.
이 투어의 정차 지점 (8)
- 1 Key Largo (MM 100) Start of the Keys. The African Queen (the actual boat from the Humphrey Bogart film) is docked at a hotel here.
- 2 John Pennekamp Coral Reef SP First undersea park in the US (1960). The reef is the only living coral barrier reef in North America.
- 3 Islamorada (MM 80) "Sport Fishing Capital of the World." The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane killed 400+ WWI veterans working on the Overseas Highway. The wind hit 200 mph.
- 4 Seven Mile Bridge The old bridge (visible alongside) was built by Henry Flagler's railroad in 1912. Workers called it "Flagler's Folly." 700+ workers died during construction.
- 5 Bahia Honda State Park (MM 37) Rated one of the best beaches in the US. The old railroad bridge still stands — walk across it for a view of both the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico simultaneously.
- 6 Key West Historic Seaport Shrimp boats and charter fishing. Key West is closer to Havana (90 miles) than to Miami (160 miles).
- 7 Hemingway House Ernest Hemingway lived here 1931-1940. Wrote To Have and Have Not and parts of For Whom the Bell Tolls. 60+ six-toed cats still roam the property — descendants of his cat Snowball.
- 8 Southernmost Point Buoy End point. 90 miles to Cuba. The buoy is actually not the true southernmost point (that's on a nearby Navy base), but nobody tells the tourists.
