- 1 El Mamey Trailhead The trek to Ciudad Perdida (the Lost City) must be undertaken with a licensed tour operator — independent access is not permitted. The four-to-six day trek crosses indigenous Kogi, Wiwa, and Arhuaco territory. Respect for indigenous culture and land is non-negotiable. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the world's highest coastal mountain range, rising from the Caribbean to 5,775 metres in just 42 kilometres. The jungle is hot and humid; carry plenty of water and insect repellent.
- 2 Banana Plantation The trail passes through agricultural land before entering forest. Banana, cacao, and coffee plants line the path. Colombian coffee from the Sierra Nevada is among the finest in the world — the unique microclimate of altitude and coastal moisture creates exceptional beans.
- 3 Rio Buritaca First Crossing The first river crossing — the Buritaca River will be your companion for the entire trek. Crossings range from ankle to waist deep depending on rainfall. River sandals are essential. The water is refreshingly cool in the tropical heat.
- 4 Jungle Trail Climb The trail climbs steeply through dense tropical forest. Humidity exceeds 90 percent; sweat is constant. The canopy is alive with birds — toucans, tanagers, and the distinctive calls of howler monkeys echoing through the trees. Blue morpho butterflies flash through clearings.
- 5 First Indigenous Village The trail passes through a Kogi settlement — round thatched huts in a forest clearing. The Kogi are direct descendants of the Tairona civilisation that built Ciudad Perdida over 1,000 years ago. They maintain their ancient way of life and consider themselves guardians of the natural world. Photograph only with permission.
- 6 Jungle Ridge Trail The trail follows a ridge through cloud forest — the elevation creates a cooler microclimate where epiphytes, orchids, and bromeliads festoon every branch. The biodiversity of the Sierra Nevada is extraordinary; it is one of the most irreplaceable ecosystems on Earth.
- 7 Rio Buritaca Second Crossing Another river crossing — the trail crisscrosses the Buritaca repeatedly. Natural swimming holes invite a cool dip during rest stops. The river water is clean at this elevation. Tiny fish nibble at your feet — a natural pedicure in the Colombian jungle.
- 8 Adan Camp Approach The trail descends toward the first campsite. The jungle closes in — the canopy is so dense that little sunlight reaches the forest floor. The air is thick with the scent of decomposing leaves and tropical flowers. Fireflies begin to appear as daylight fades.
- 9 Cabana Adan Camp The first night's camp sits beside the river — hammocks or bunks under a thatched roof. The guides prepare Colombian cuisine: rice, beans, plantain, and grilled chicken. The jungle soundtrack at night is extraordinary — frogs, insects, and the distant roar of howler monkeys create a continuous chorus.
- 10 Evening River View The river beside the camp reflects the emerging stars. The Sierra Nevada's jungle canopy is home to over 600 bird species and 120 mammal species. The Kogi believe the Sierra Nevada is the "Heart of the World" and that their rituals keep the planet in balance. Three more days of jungle, river, and ancient stone lie between you and the Lost City.
