🚶10 mapped stops

The first day of Australia's most iconic multi-day walk — from Dove Lake beneath Cradle Mountain through ancient rainforest and alpine moorland in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Pass required.

このツアーのスポット(10)

  1. 1
Ronny Creek The Overland Track begins at Ronny Creek in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. A Great Walk pass must be booked in advance — only 34 walkers depart daily during peak season. The track runs 65 kilometres through the heart of Tasmania's World Heritage Wilderness. Carry full wet weather gear — this is one of the wettest places in Australia. Wombats graze openly on the buttongrass plains.
  2. 2
Buttongrass Moorland The trail crosses buttongrass plains — an ancient ecosystem unique to Tasmania and southwest Australia. The moorland is waterlogged and windswept, supporting specialist plants that have survived since Gondwana. Bennett's wallabies and wombats are commonly seen grazing in the tussock.
  3. 3
Crater Falls Track Junction A spur trail leads to Crater Falls — a powerful cascade in a fern-draped gorge. The main track continues through mixed forest of myrtle beech, sassafras, and leatherwood. Tasmanian leatherwood honey — one of the world's rarest honeys — comes from the trees along this section.
  4. 4
Wombat Pool A tranquil tarn reflecting Cradle Mountain's jagged dolerite peaks. The mountain was named by early surveyors who thought the summit resembled a mining cradle. The dolerite columns are 170 million years old — formed from magma that intruded into older sedimentary rock.
  5. 5
Lake Lilla A small glacial lake surrounded by ancient pandanus — pencil pines found only in Tasmania. These trees grow just one centimetre per year; a two-metre tree may be 200 years old. They evolved when Australia was part of Gondwana and now survive only in Tasmania's highlands.
  6. 6
Dove Lake Circuit Intersection The Overland Track intersects the Dove Lake circuit. Dove Lake is a glacial tarn reflecting Cradle Mountain — one of the most photographed landscapes in Australia. The water is tannin-stained brown from the buttongrass but perfectly clean.
  7. 7
Marions Lookout Climb A steep side trip to Marions Lookout — scrambling up a rock face with chains for assistance. The view from the top encompasses Dove Lake, Cradle Mountain, and the vast Tasmanian wilderness stretching south. On clear days, the scale of the landscape is breathtaking.
  8. 8
Kitchen Hut A day-use shelter on the alpine plateau between Cradle Mountain and Barn Bluff. The landscape is subalpine — cushion plants, scoparia heath, and scattered pencil pines. The weather at this elevation changes rapidly; conditions that are benign can become dangerous within minutes.
  9. 9
Cradle Mountain Summit Side Trail A challenging side trip to the summit of Cradle Mountain at 1,545 metres. The scramble over dolerite boulders is demanding in any weather and dangerous in rain, wind, or low visibility. The summit views are spectacular but the mountain must be treated with respect.
  10. 10
Waterfall Valley Hut The day ends at Waterfall Valley Hut — a modern shelter with gas heating and raised sleeping platforms. The valley is named for the numerous waterfalls that cascade from the surrounding cliffs. Currawongs — intelligent black birds — will attempt to steal any unattended food. Tomorrow continues south through ancient forests toward Lake Will and Lake Windermere.
