   Platteklip Gorge Trailhead Table Mountain rises 1,085 metres above Cape Town — a flat-topped sandstone mesa that is one of the oldest mountains on Earth. The Platteklip Gorge route is the most direct ascent — steep but well-maintained stone steps gaining 700 metres in 2.5 kilometres. Start early to avoid midday heat. Carry at least two litres of water — there are no sources on the mountain. Be aware of rapidly changing weather; the "tablecloth" cloud can descend without warning.

   First Gorge Viewpoint A brief widening in the gorge offers views back over Cape Town and the harbour. Robben Island — where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years — is visible in Table Bay. The city spreads below in a bowl between Table Mountain, Lion's Head, and Signal Hill.

   Mid-Gorge Rest A flat section provides a rest spot. The gorge walls rise steeply on both sides — layers of sandstone and shale recording 500 million years of geological history. Dassies (rock hyraxes) — small, furry mammals that are, improbably, the closest living relatives of elephants — sun themselves on the boulders.

   Upper Gorge The gradient eases slightly as the gorge opens toward the summit plateau. The vegetation changes — mountain fynbos species adapted to the thin soils and fierce winds of the summit. In spring, the mountain erupts in flower — dozens of species blooming simultaneously.

   Summit Plateau Edge Emerging from the gorge onto the summit plateau is dramatic — the flat top stretches for three kilometres, covered in fynbos and scattered rocks. The cable car station is visible to the west. The views are immediate and immense: Cape Town, the Cape Flats, False Bay, and the Hottentots Holland Mountains.

   Maclear's Beacon The highest point of Table Mountain at 1,085 metres — marked by a stone cairn built by Sir Thomas Maclear in 1865 for geodetic surveys. The view encompasses the entire Cape Peninsula from Signal Hill to Cape Point. The Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet at the Cape — two great bodies of water visible simultaneously from this ancient mountaintop.

   Summit Walk to Cable Car Station The summit plateau walk to the cable car station crosses flat terrain covered in restios and proteas. The flora here has survived for millions of years — adapting to fire, drought, and wind. Table Mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New7Wonders of Nature.

    Cable Car Upper Station The cable car descends 700 metres to the lower station in five minutes — the rotating floor provides 360-degree views during the descent. Alternatively, the descent via Platteklip Gorge takes approximately 90 minutes. The sunset from the summit — Table Bay turning gold, the city lighting up below — is one of the great urban views on Earth.
