- 2 Villa La Angostura A lakeside village surrounded by arrayanes — the myrtle forest with cinnamon-colored bark that inspired the Bambi forest. The Road of the Seven Lakes continues south from here.
- 3 San Martin de los Andes A charming ski town on Lake Lacar. The surrounding Lanin National Park is crowned by the perfect volcanic cone of Volcan Lanin at 3,776 meters.
- 4 Junin de los Andes The trout fishing capital of Argentina. The Chimehuin River yields trophy-size brown and rainbow trout that attract fly fishermen from around the world.
- 5 Ruta 40 — Patagonian Steppe The road enters the vast Patagonian steppe — a windswept tableland stretching to the Atlantic. Guanacos, rheas, and Patagonian hares scatter across the tawny grasslands. Fuel distances become extreme.
- 6 Perito Moreno Town Not to be confused with the glacier of the same name. This small town is a crucial fuel and supply stop in the vast emptiness of central Patagonia. Distances between services can exceed 300 kilometers.
- 7 Cueva de las Manos The Cave of the Hands — 9,000-year-old stenciled handprints in ochre, red, and black cover the cave walls. UNESCO World Heritage. These are among the oldest known art works in South America.
- 8 Bajo Caracoles Possibly the most remote fuel stop on Ruta 40. The tiny settlement has a single gas pump and a basic store. Fill your tank and carry extra fuel — the next services are far ahead.
- 9 Gobernador Gregores A windswept town on the Chico River. The Patagonian wind here is relentless — gusts can exceed 100 km/h. Keep both hands on the wheel and watch for crosswind gusts on exposed sections.
- 10 Tres Lagos Named for the three lakes visible from the surrounding hills. The road begins its approach to the glacial zone. Mount Fitz Roy and the Patagonian Ice Field grow on the western horizon.
- 11 El Chalten — Mount Fitz Roy Argentina's trekking capital sits beneath the granite spires of Monte Fitz Roy. The Patagonia clothing company took its logo from this mountain. The dawn light on Fitz Roy is one of the great mountain views.
- 12 El Calafate — Lake Argentino The gateway to Perito Moreno Glacier. The town sits on the shore of Lake Argentino, the largest lake in Argentina. Calafate berries — the local fruit — are said to guarantee your return.
