A 50-mile engineering marvel carved into the mountainsides of Glacier National Park. Crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, it is one of the most difficult roads ever built in the United States.

   West Glacier Entrance The western gateway to Glacier National Park. The Middle Fork of the Flathead River rushes alongside as you begin the climb into the mountains.

   Lake McDonald Lodge The rustic 1913 Swiss chalet-style lodge sits at the foot of Lake McDonald, the park's largest lake — 10 miles long and 472 feet deep.

   Trail of the Cedars A boardwalk trail through an ancient cedar-hemlock forest. Trees over 500 years old tower above Avalanche Creek's sculpted red argillite gorge.

   The Loop The road's famous hairpin turn offers views of Heavens Peak and the sheer face of the Garden Wall — a knife-edge ridge carved by glaciers on both sides.

   Weeping Wall Spring snowmelt cascades directly onto the road from the cliffs above. Workers blasted this section from sheer rock walls during construction in the 1920s and 30s.

   Bird Woman Falls Overlook A 560-foot waterfall plunges from a hanging glacier. The rugged peaks of the Lewis Range tower on all sides.

   Logan Pass — Continental Divide At 6,646 feet, you stand on the spine of the continent. Rain falling here flows west to the Pacific or east to the Atlantic. Mountain goats graze along the visitor center walls.

   Jackson Glacier Overlook One of the park's remaining 25 named glaciers, visible from the roadside. In 1850, the park held 150 glaciers. By 2030, they may all be gone.

   St. Mary Lake — Wild Goose Island The tiny island in St. Mary Lake is one of the most photographed spots in the park. The turquoise waters reflect the jagged peaks of the Lewis Range.

    St. Mary Visitor Center The eastern end of Going-to-the-Sun Road. The Great Plains begin here — the dramatic transition from mountain to prairie is visible in a single panoramic sweep.
