Furka Pass: Swiss Alps Glacial Crossing
🚗10 mapped stops
The Furka Pass climbs to 2,429 meters through the heart of the Swiss Alps — famous as the location of the James Bond car chase in Goldfinger. The road passes the source of the Rhone River and the retreating Rhone Glacier.
Arrêts de ce circuit (10)
- 1 Andermatt A strategic alpine crossroads at 1,444 meters where four major passes converge. The Swiss Army garrisoned troops here for centuries — the fortress mentality is built into the landscape.
- 2 Realp The last village before the Furka climb. The Furka-Oberalp railway line runs through here — the Glacier Express route connecting Zermatt to St. Moritz.
- 3 Furka Pass East Ramp The hairpins begin in earnest, climbing above the treeline into a stark alpine world of rock and ice. The air thins as each switchback gains altitude.
- 4 Furka Pass Summit — 2,429m The summit plateau offers views of the Bernese Alps to the north and the Valais Alps to the south. In winter, meters of snow close the pass from October to June.
- 5 Hotel Belvédère — Rhone Glacier The iconic pink hotel from the 1882 Goldfinger car chase sits above the Rhone Glacier. Tragically, the glacier has retreated so far that it is barely visible from the road today.
- 6 Ice Grotto A tunnel carved into the glacier reveals blue and turquoise ice. The grotto must be re-carved each year as the glacier moves and melts — a living monument to climate change.
- 7 Gletsch — Source of the Rhone The meltwater from the Rhone Glacier begins its 505-mile journey to the Mediterranean Sea. The Rhone flows through Geneva, Lyon, and Avignon before reaching the Camargue delta.
- 8 Grimsel Pass Road Junction The junction where the Furka and Grimsel passes diverge. The Grimsel Pass climbs to 2,164 meters — a second crossing is possible for those seeking more alpine adventure.
- 9 Oberwald A quiet Valais village where the upper Rhone Valley begins. Traditional wooden chalets blackened by centuries of Alpine sun line the narrow streets.
- 10 Fiesch — Aletsch Glacier Access A cable car from Fiesch reaches the Eggishorn viewpoint overlooking the Great Aletsch Glacier — the longest glacier in the Alps at 23 kilometers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
