Paradas en Este Tour (10)

  1. 1
Senaru Village Gate Mount Rinjani at 3,726 metres is Indonesia's second highest volcano and sacred to the Sasak and Hindu Balinese peoples. A licensed guide and porter are mandatory — register at the national park office. The two-to-three day trek climbs 2,000 metres through tropical forest to the crater rim. Carry warm clothes for the summit — temperatures can drop below freezing. Download audio before starting; no mobile signal above the village.
  2. 2
Rainforest Entry The trail enters dense tropical rainforest — towering mahogany, fig, and casuarina trees form a high canopy. The understory is thick with ferns, orchids, and climbing vines. Ebony leaf monkeys watch from the canopy — their dark faces and silver-tipped hair distinctive against the green.
  3. 3
Lower Forest Trail The trail climbs steadily through the forest belt. The soil is volcanic — dark, rich, and fertile. Rinjani last erupted significantly in 2010; the mountain is actively monitored by Indonesian volcanologists. The forest captures moisture from the trade winds, supporting a remarkably diverse ecosystem.
  4. 4
Savanna Transition Above 2,000 metres, the forest transitions to montane savanna — open grassland with scattered trees. The change is dramatic: dense jungle gives way to windswept grass and scrub within metres. The views begin to open — the Lombok Strait and the ocean appear to the west.
  5. 5
Pos 2 Rest Area A designated rest area with basic shelter. The guides prepare tea and snacks. The altitude is beginning to be felt — breathing is noticeably harder and headaches are common. Drink water steadily. The Sasak porters carry enormous loads with grace, their flip-flops on volcanic gravel making Westerners' hiking boots look excessive.
  6. 6
Montane Meadow The trail crosses an alpine meadow — edelweiss grows here, the same genus as the European alpine flower but adapted to tropical high altitude. The Sasak people consider edelweiss sacred; picking it is prohibited. Leave No Trace — this fragile alpine zone is home to several endemic species.
  7. 7
Pos 3 Upper Forest The trail enters a band of casuarina forest at higher elevation — the trees are wind-bent and stunted. The trunks are covered in epiphytic ferns and mosses. At this altitude, clouds frequently envelop the mountain, reducing visibility and creating an eerie atmosphere.
  8. 8
Treeline Break Above the tree line, bare volcanic scree stretches toward the crater rim. The vegetation is sparse — only the hardiest alpine plants survive the thin soil, cold nights, and volcanic gases. The rim is visible above, a jagged silhouette against the sky.
  9. 9
Crater Rim Camp Approach The final approach to the rim camp traverses loose volcanic gravel. Each step slides backward slightly. The air is thin and the gradient relentless. The crater reveals itself gradually — first a hint of blue water, then the full expanse of Segara Anak, the crater lake.
  10. 10
Senaru Crater Rim Camp The camp sits on the crater rim at 2,641 metres. Below, Segara Anak — a turquoise lake filling the caldera — stretches two kilometres across. A small volcanic cone called Gunung Barujari rises from the lake, still active and steaming. The Sasak people believe the lake is home to spirits; they make annual offerings of gold, clothing, and livestock. The sunset from the rim — with Bali's Mount Agung visible on the western horizon — is transcendent.
