Paradas en Este Tour (10)

  1. 1
Andalsnes — Gateway to the Trolls The mountaineering capital of Norway sits at the end of the Romsdal Valley. The Rauma Railway — one of Europe's most scenic train journeys — also terminates here.
  2. 2
Trollveggen (Troll Wall) Europe's tallest vertical rock face rises 1,100 meters from the valley floor. The overhang at the top leans 50 meters outward. BASE jumping here was banned after fatalities.
  3. 3
Sogge Bridge Viewpoint A viewpoint looking up at the Troll Wall and the surrounding peaks of the Romsdal Alps. The valley floor catches the meltwater from the surrounding glaciers.
  4. 4
Trollstigen Base The road begins its impossible-looking ascent. The 11 hairpin turns were carved into the mountainside between 1928 and 1936 — an engineering feat of the pre-machinery era.
  5. 5
Hairpin 5 — Stigfossen Waterfall The 320-meter Stigfossen waterfall plunges beside the road. At hairpin 5, the spray can drench your vehicle. The roar of the water drowns out engine noise.
  6. 6
Hairpin 8 — Stone Bridge The original 1936 stone bridge crosses the Stigfoss stream. The road has been widened since, but the original bridge remains as a testament to Depression-era craftsmanship.
  7. 7
Trollstigen Summit Viewpoint The glass and steel viewing platform extends over the cliff edge, 700 meters above the valley floor. Looking straight down through the glass floor is not for the faint-hearted.
  8. 8
Trollstigen Mountain Lodge The architecturally striking visitor center at the summit integrates into the landscape. Norwegian design philosophy insists that buildings serve the mountains, not the other way around.
  9. 9
Valldal Valley Descent The southern descent drops into the lush Valldal Valley, known as Norway's strawberry capital. The contrast between the harsh mountain pass and the fertile valley below is striking.
  10. 10
Geiranger — Geirangerfjord The drive can continue to Geirangerfjord — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Seven Sisters waterfall drops 410 meters into the fjord from abandoned mountain farms.
