Paradas en Este Tour (10)
- 1 Ouarzazate — Atlas Film Studios The "Hollywood of Morocco" — Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones were filmed here. The kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO site, lies just 30 kilometers west.
- 2 Skoura — Kasbah Amridil An oasis town sheltered by a vast palmerie — over 700,000 palm trees. The 17th-century Kasbah Amridil appears on the Moroccan 50-dirham note.
- 3 Kelaat M'Gouna — Rose Valley In May, the Valley of Roses blooms with Damask roses cultivated since the 10th century. The annual Rose Festival fills the air with fragrance. Rosewater and rose products are sold roadside.
- 4 Boumalne Dades — Valley Entrance The gateway to the Dades Valley. The town sits at the mouth of the gorge where the Dades River exits the Atlas Mountains into the desert oasis below.
- 5 Dades Gorge — Monkey Fingers Eroded rock formations resembling monkey paws reach up from the canyon walls. The geological formations here are 180 million years old — Jurassic-era sediments folded and sculpted by water.
- 6 Dades Gorge — Switchbacks The road climbs through dramatic hairpin turns carved into the cliff face. The gorge narrows and the red rock walls tower hundreds of meters above the ribbon of asphalt.
- 7 Tamellalt — Berber Villages Fortified Berber villages of mud-brick and pise cling to the cliff sides. Families have farmed the narrow terraces along the river for centuries, irrigating with ancient channels called seguias.
- 8 Tinghir — Palmerie Viewpoint The expansive Tinghir palmerie — one of the largest in Morocco — carpets the valley floor with date palms. The old Jewish quarter (mellah) preserves the heritage of a community that lived here for centuries.
- 9 Todra Gorge — Entrance The gorge narrows to just 10 meters wide between 300-meter limestone walls. The scale is overwhelming — two vertical walls of rock with only a sliver of sky above.
- 10 Todra Gorge — Narrowest Point The canyon's most dramatic section. Rock climbers scale the vertical walls on established routes. The river runs cold through the shade of the gorge even in summer heat.
